The Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Centre (HBMC) was founded in 1982 in Kathmandu by Pam and Karuna Cayton, long-time students of Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Originally known as the Himalayan Yogic Institute, it was created to make authentic Buddhist teachings accessible to travelers and seekers who couldn’t easily reach Kopan Monastery at that time.
With Lama Yeshe’s blessing, the first center opened in a small historic house near the Yak and Yeti Hotel — a peaceful garden refuge amid the lively streets of Kathmandu. Over the years, the center evolved, changed its name, and became an FPMT-affiliated center, continuing its mission to share the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha.
Today, HBMC offers teachings, meditation sessions, and retreats in the heart of Thamel, providing a quiet space for reflection and spiritual growth in the midst of the city’s vibrant energy.
