From Backpack to Robes:
A Conversation with Venerable Tenzin
A Conversation with Venerable Tenzin
Born in Australia, Venerable Tenzin's journey began as a young backpacker whose travels led her to a life-changing encounter with Buddhism — more than 40 years ago. Not long after, that encounter led her to take robes, and she has been walking the monastic path ever since.
Her life has been deeply rooted in Kopan Monastery, where she first arrived as a volunteer and where she has spent the greater part of her time. Along the way, she has also offered service at a Western Dharma centre and in Delhi centre, shaping her days around the advice of her teachers — offering service, attending teachings, and doing her sincere best to put the practice into her heart.
At the centre of her path stands her root teacher, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, whom she first met at Kopan in 1983 during one of her first Dharma courses. She also holds deep gratitude for Khensur Rinpoche Lama Lhundrup, the beloved former abbot of Kopan, who was a guiding presence during her early years as a volunteer. Lama Konchog, too, became an important teacher, arriving at Kopan around the time Ani Jan first made it her home.
She reflects on her life with quiet joy and humility — grateful, above all, for how extraordinarily lucky she has been.
